Period VI – Multicultural and Multilingual learning at SSB

SSB is now in the final period of learning.  Period VI is focused on Multilingual and Multicultural learning for all students.

As specified in the EU Key Competences for Lifelong Learning and our national curricula, being able to function in a multilingual environment and within a multicultural community are necessary skills for 21st century learners.

Value words like respect and tolerance provide the foundation of our learning this period.  Students will learn about their own cultural history, specific Nordic culture, as well as other folk groups from around the world (with a special focus on minority groups).

Our students study, at least, three languages (Mother tongue, French and English).  If you add in the Nordic languages, they often communicate in 5 different languages on any given day.  We believe that the ability to communicate in three languages – to be able to express yourself and support your ideas – is a key skill for our student’s future success.  During this period, we will study how speaking different languages affects how we organize and live our lives. Watch this video to see how we work with languages:

Multicultural awareness is a buzz word in education right now.  For us, it is a reality.  Students who live abroad must be constantly responsive to new environments, new communities, new friends.  Being able to understand that everyone has a specific background that

Imageshapes their attitudes and behaviours gives our students an advantage when meeting new people and new situations.  Whether it is playing sports in a Belgian club, participating in Model United Nations simulation, or travelling to a new place for a new job, our students need to be aware of different cultures and respectful of different ideas.  This period, students will study how their own cultural background compares to that of classmates and other students around the world.

How do we promote multicultural learning?  By finding real and relevant activities with our partners:  Exchanges with the Japanese School, participation in our Comenius project with partner schools in Finland and Denmark, cooperating and supporting a sister school in the Congo, participation in Belgian activities such as ECOLOCOS and Brabant-Wallon Sports exchange, just to name a few.

Connecting with our local Belgian community is of extra importance.  We are excited to announce that in August 2012, Argenteuil will be home to 20 – 40

Belgian students attending the Brussels School and/or the Bogaert International School.  When all three schools are “under one roof”,

it will be natural to develop real cooperation.  Students from all three schools will participate together in sports and cultural activities.

We will share breaks and after-school activities.  Eventually, students will study languages together.

We are excited about this development at our school . . .

It gives us the chance to share our culture and traditions,  learn more about our host country’s culture and practice our multilingual skills everyday.
